17 months later, Stan Wawrinka is back to winning ways
Stan Wawrinka exulted as never, without doubt, after a success in the first round! And for good reason. Faller of the American giant Reilly Opelka on the clay courts of the Foro Olimpico in Rome, the Swiss won his first success on the ATP circuit since January 2021 and the first round of the Australian Open (3-6, 7- 5, 6-2)
456 days after his success against the Portuguese Pedro Sousa in the first round of the Australian Open, Stan Wawrinka has finally tasted the joys of a victory on the ATP circuit. However, it was not easy for the Swiss, winner of three Grand Slam tournaments, against the great American server Reilly Opelka.
Powerless against the American's strike force, Stan Wawrinka waited until his back was against the wall to react and make his opponent falter. Trailing 6-3, 4-2, he overturned a badly compromised situation by winning five of the last six first-set games to tie the game at one set everywhere, before flying over the last act to qualify for the second round.
Operated twice on the foot in 2021, the Swiss had been stopped for a year before returning to the circuit on March 29. Beaten in the first round in Marbella by Elias Ymer, then entering Monte Carlo by Alexander Bublik, Wawrinka only waited for his third match of the year to achieve success.
A success that allows Wawrinka to join the second round. He will now face the winner of the duel between Laslo Djere and Borna Coric, also scheduled for Monday.
